Urbench
Urbench is a modular street furniture system designed for dynamic public spaces. Developed through close research with various municipalities, the system accommodates society’s changing needs over time, with an eye for production and maintenance. Each of the three elements, one straight and two curved, can be used as both a stand-alone bench or picnic table, or they can be combined into various configurations that stimulate interaction. On normal days, Urbench can function as basic street furniture. But when needed the municipality or organisers can unlock the elements and create their preferred layout. Afterwards, the elements can simply be rearranged again and locked to meet society's current needs.

As part of this project it was important to understand the main guidelines to follow when designing for public space. Through close research with different municipalities three guidelines shaped a framework in which the furniture was shaped.
Production & Repair; by designing interchangeable elements, like identical frames and repeatable seats.
Social Influence; by adding a product catalogue, showing the proven influence composition and use can have on society.
Maintenance & Use; by avoiding misuse of the concept and design, including the use of open frames and integrated lock.
